Name: Form and content as war and peace in Russian philosophy of language of XIX–XX centuries

Abstract: The article considers some evolutionary stages of views of Russian linguists and philosophers of language on the issue of correlation of form and con-tent. After the “peaceful” period of “harmony” of content and form in A. A. Potebnja's and his school's linguistic conceptions, follows a period of “war' against “contentism” and “psychologism” in linguistics under the auspices of Russian for-malist school (V. B. Shklovsky. B. E. Eikhenbaum). Against what did the rebels fight? What were the victims of the war led by formalists winning back the primacy of form in verbal art? Was it followed by a “reconciliation” of the “victorious” form and the “defeated” content? Answering these questions, this article invokes the arguments from the wing of defenders and “satellites” of the Potebnian front after the “victory” of Russian formalists – A. Bely, S. A. Askoldov, B. M. Engelgardt, I. Plotnikov, R. V. Ivanov-Razumnik and others.
