Name: Images and roles of language in visual art

Abstract: The relationship of art and language has been a repeatedly proven fact to date. This article analyzes a particular manifestation of such a relationship – namely, the role of language and imagery in the art of the last century. The study highlights the key roles of language participating in the creation of contemporary works of art. These roles conform to the generally accepted language functions: nominative, metalinguistic, poetic, Intersemiotic, perlocutionary. In all cases, they are subject to the aesthetic function, modifying it based on particular artistic tasks of an artist or an art movement. It is in modern art that it became possible to actualize all these functions, and language, in turn, gave art such opportunities.
