Name: Image of language in “Logical analysis of language”

Abstract: We use the term image of language introduced by Yu. S. Stepanov to analyze the works by N. D. Arutiunova the founder of “Logical analysis of language” in Russia. Various images of language are opposed in Logical analysis of language to strict terminological usage of this word. The most frequent images are language as agens, language as patiens, language as space, language as surface, language as way of speaking. These images are very different from those that emerge in everyday speech, they are a distinctive stylistic feature of Arutiunova’s works and also a reflection of a very peculiar way of thinking. The flexibility of images of language in 30 years history of work of “Logical analysis of language” in Russia has been the key to productive cooperation between scholars representing different approaches in linguistics.
