Abstract:

Non-ritual songs of the Udmurts of Tomsk Oblast have not yet been the subject of analytical research, unlike ritual songs. The article is focused on the philological approach – analysis of the poetic text’s motifs detects the most characteristic types for this tradition. Similar songs of the indigenous tradition are included. The results showed that miserable life theme is the leading theme of the songs, which is explained by the difficult fate of the migrants. The motifs of past youth, aging, orphanhood / loneliness, longing, suffering, separation, death (suicide) act relevant in this thematic block. The theme of a happy life / destiny is revealed through the motif of family relations.
