Name: The Mask of the Jester in the Story of Yu. Vyazemsky “Jester”

Abstract:

Based on the material of the story by Yu. Vyazemsky, the article analyzes the speech mask of the jester, which is used by the main character as a means of combating the injustice of others. An analysis of dictionaries and corpus data showed that in modern usage the word jester is found in the meaning of “one who clowns around and makes jokes for the amusement of others is a common laughing stock”, the main semes being “laughter” and “performance”. However, in the story the hero differentiates the concepts of a school jester and a real Jester, the first relates to the dictionary meaning and has a disparaging connotation, the second he calls himself; the real Jester is completely unfunny, he is feared and respected. Since the purpose of using a speech mask is to punish the enemy, and not to entertain the spectators, the mask is based on the idea of a jester as a person who demonstratively and evilly exposes the vices of people, but does this in a pointedly indifferent and laconic manner. The main means of creating a mask are emotive-evaluative vocabulary, colloquial and vernacular vocabulary, ironic diminutives, as well as non-verbal means that convey a rudely emotional manner of speech.
