ArticleName: Usual and occasional phraseology in Anton Chekov’s plays Authors: A. S. But Institute of Linguistics of RAS
Abstract: Set expressions and idioms of various types are a significant part of Chekhov’s oeuvre. They are a peculiar means of manifestation of the author’s linguistic persona which allow to disclose the peculiarities of individual style and certain aspects of Chekhov’s world view, as well as to see how the latter coincide with the Russian sphere of concepts. Alongside with the usual phraseologisms, transformed ones are quite typical for Chekhov’s writings. The way they are used, as well as the word coinage so typical of Chekhov make the study of his transformed phraseology a very topical issue. Alongside with usual phraseologisms, Chekov’s plays are quite rich in transformed phraseological units (PUs). The way they are used, as well as the linguistic creativity which is quite typical of Chekov, make this study of his authorial phraseology a topical one.
