ArticleName: Semiotics of the liver in European and Russian literature Authors: V. V. Maroshi Novosibirsk State Pedagogical University
Abstract: In Ancient Greek lyric poetry and Roman satire the liver of the lyrical hero is associated with fire and affections of love and hate. In Modern literature the symbol of a suffering heart plays a major role. The liver in European poetry had a powerful rival, the spleen, the source of black bile and corresponding mood. In XIX century the liver trouble symbolizes the conflict of «underground » character with reality and the struggle of the evil and damned poet with society. In XX c. Russian poet (I. Brodsky, M. Eremin, V. Krivulin, V. Yemelin), identifying himself with Prometheus, is conflicting with the state, symbolized by double-headed eagles of a European state emblems.
