Name: Language as a Major Agent in the Poetry of Alexander Kabanov

Abstract: Recently, the role of poets in Ukrainian society has been actively changing. Poets are forming public opinion, reinterpreting the most urgent social issues in their poems. My paper considers language as a cultural and political agent in the poetry volume of Alexander Kabanov, as well as contemporary language policy in Ukraine. The focus is on bilingualism in the poetry of Kabanov, i. e., features of the use of Russian and Ukrainian in his poetry. Aleksandr Kabanov (1968), a leading Russian-speaking Ukrainian poet, presents in his poetry collection the poems written primarily between 2014 and 2017. He raises such topics as the military conflict in Donbas, the accession of Crimea, as well as the place of the Russian language in modern Ukrainian society and poetry. Transcript from my interview with Alexander Kabanov is also used in the paper. The interview was conducted in the editorial office of “SHO” magazine in Kiev on 24 April, 2018, in order to clarify the author’s understanding of the concepts of “poetry”, “politics”, “social media” and their interrelationships in the contemporary public discourse of Ukraine.
