Abstract: The paper explores the linguo-creative functioning of precedent phenomena in twenty popular British comedy films (e.g., “Time Bandits”, “Clockwise”, “A Fish Called Wanda”. The research rests on the conceptions of the precedent phenomena and linguistic creativity which were elaborated in the works by Yu. N. Karaulov, V. V. Krasnykh, I. V. Zykova and some others. The paper introduces a new linguo-creative parameter of “the precedent phenomenon” and develops a five-step algorithm of its investigation. According to the research findings, the parameter’s activization in the British comedy films under consideration is characterized by a certain specificity, which is determined by: 1) the peculiarities of correlation of the “precedent phenomenon” parameter with other parameters; 2) belonging to a certain type of precedent phenomena (the majority of precedent phenomena are precedent names (90 %)); 3) to a concrete cultural source (the majority of precedent phenomena used in British comedy films refer to various kinds of art); 4) the creative modifications of precedent phenomena (e.g., Humpty-Numpty). The study of cultural sources of precedent phenomena allows us to systematize them and reveal the main peculiarities of their creative reproducibility in the cinematic discourse.
