Abstract:

The purpose of this article is to analyze intertextual relations with Russian literature of the 19th and early 20th centuries in the poetry of Shanghai emigrant writers of the 1930–1940s.

Research methodology and methods. The work uses the method of structural genetic analysis.

Research results. The intertextual references are used with few transformations, keeping their form and meaning. This is a way to support the continuity of tradition.

In one subgroup of texts the allusions and epigraphs are used to show the unity with the great Russian writers. Acknowledging the difference from their predecessors, emigrant poets nevertheless emphasize their agreement with a classical writer, the intergenerational continuity. They associate themselves with everything what they see as precious, eternal and true in Russian culture (Saint-Petersburg myth, Dostoyevsky’s characters and patriotism).

In the other subgroup a borrowed image works as an illustration, a model, a symbol for expressing a concept, an idea, stand in life. The references are used without rethinking, transforming or deconstruction of the borrowed element, but the attitude to the source can vary from acceptance (Dostoyevsky, Pushkin) to rejection (Turgenev, Blok).

Conclusion. The necessity to find anything known and secure in the chaos of emigrant life stimulates using the intertextual references and continuing the tradition. The new historical experience is interpreted trough the inherited models of Russian classical literature. The references to Russian literature of 19th – early 20th centuries serve as connection with the past and response to the challenges of the present.
