Abstract:

The article concerns to the systematization of the parameter of the geometric form of Russian punctuation marks (PM). Perceptual characteristics of PM are important for their use in text. One of the most important of these is the geometric form. Despite the large number and diversity of PM (7–10 main ones), their geometric form is reduced to three types: dot, dash, and arc. The dot as a PM and a component of PM has the least expressive form, but at the same time, due to the maximum contrast with the size of the letters, it turns out to be the basis of the PM system. Marks of the dash type perform an ambivalent function of separation and connection, and marks of the arc type serve, in addition to dividing the context, to fix or establish the inequality of the separated contexts. The greater complexity of arcshaped PM gives them greater expressiveness and, possibly, contributes to a greater occurrence of such marks in writing. The geometric form is not the only parameter influencing the behavior of PM and its reflection of the relationships between contexts. The redundancy of spatial characteristics of the PM allows them to take on different geometric forms and enter into synonymous, antonymous and other paradigmatic relationships.

Keywords: geometric form of punctuation mark, occurrence of punctuation marks, dot, slash, emoticon, single bracket
