ArticleName: Multilingualism in Romance poetry of the Middle Ages Authors: I. I. Chelysheva Institute of Linguistics, Russian Academy of Sciences
Abstract: The article deals with bilingualism and multilingualism in the Romance poetry of the Middle Ages. Firstly, the phenomenon could have resulted from the individual multilingualism of a particular author. Secondly, it used to come into existence in communities that combined two or more languages in everyday communication. Thirdly, multilingualism was related to the activities of many prestigious literary schools and movements, as language was considered to be an inherent character of a given movement. A classic example of prestigious poetry producing a prestigious language is the poetry of the Occitan troubadours, while on Iberian Peninsula there existed Galician-Portugal courtesy poetry, too. Fourthly, a person who wrote poetry in a Romance language was supposed to know at least some Latin too, therefore the Romance culture in Europe is unthinkable without Latin-Romance bilingualism.
