Abstract: The paper analyzes some interpretation strategies of the novel, universal super-language that is presented in the Russian futurism and the American avant-garde. A crisis of symbolism, as well as awareness of a cultural and socioeconomic turn, initiated the emergence of new semiotics theories, the universalization of the standardized language of cliché and the development of new communication possibilities. The common idea of language universalization was implemented in different variants of development in the Russian and American culture-language contexts. James Joyce and Eugene Jolas’ theories of the «pan-linguistic synthesis» are in opposition to Charles Kay Ogden’s utilitarian oriented «Basic English» theory that was presented in the literary journal transition in an attempt to search for a «universal language». The Babylonian theory of the American avant-garde is compared to and contrasted with the theory of Russian Futurists (Velimir Khlebnikov, first of all), that focused on searching for a protolanguage and «approaching the world language in fetus» simultaneously.

Keywords: universal language, inter-linguistic synthesis, transnational communication, Russian Futurism, American avant-garde
