ArticleName: The poetry by Edgar Maranan in the Philippine and English languages Authors: E. A. Baklanova Institute of Asian and African Studies (IAAS), Moscow State University (MSU)
Abstract: Edgar Maranan (born 1946) is a prominent contemporary Philippine poet and writer. He writes often in Filipino (Tagalog) as well as English. The difference between Maranan’s Filipino and English poetry is most discernible in the author’s choice of themes and poetic forms. In his many Filipino poems dedicated to various aspects of Philippine life, Maranan focuses on the social problems of his motherland. In the Filipino poetry, the author’s hero is not simply a dispassionate observer but an empathizing party. Here Maranan employs a large variety of versification – from traditional Philippine to European; he freely uses different types of prosody and rhyme. The subject seems like his cosmopolitan observer and traveler in his English poems. The natural difference in Maranan’s native and foreign language proficiency may account for the lesser prosodic variety in his English poetry than than in the Filipino (e.g. vers libre is employed more often).
