ArticleName: Types of image with incomprehensible semantics: toward the issue of sign structure Authors: N. V. Zlydneva Institute of Slavic Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences
Abstract: The article deals with semiotics of images with incomprehensible semantics. The focus made on the problem of asymmetry of signifying / signified related to semantics of two opposite sign types of visual representation: anamorphic images (plural signifying with singular signified) versus «generated» images, like the so-called «landscape rocks» (plural signified with singular signifying) as well as their functions in different art formations. The paintings of Russian symbolism, avant-garde, surrealism used to illustrate the thesis. The motif of rock and its semiotic implications are examined on the base of parasemiotic ideas of Roger Caillois. Crimea watercolors by M. Voloshin is considered from the viewpoint of secondary semiosis of «landscape rocks» that it creates. Arbitrary semantics of visual representations refers to the issue of signifying as a dynamic model of sign system. Keywords: sign structure, signifying / signified, anamorphic image, rock, semantics, art history, avant-garde, surrealism, signifying Bibliography: Dem'jankov V. Z.
