Name: On variability of «devisualization techniques» in textual indirect names

Authors: M. I. Kiose

Issue 2, 2015Pages 65-82
UDK: 81-114.2DOI:

Abstract: The article investigates the implications that textual analysis might have for exploring the conceptualization techniques in application to indirect names. Indirect names due to their motivation serve to demonstrate the projected referent qualia, its perception modes (bodily and inferential), and mental spaces types that are integrated to construe the conceptual referent in text. The bodily conceptualization schemes that are responsible for the so-called by Yu. S. Stepanov «devisualization techniques» in reference to names are studied by means of analyzing textual markers (sensory and non-sensory verbs and attributes). The research results in detecting primary conceptualization schemes of the referents in text. They involve conceptualization of referent formal qualia and textual functions as prevailing in referent perception (it is also true of books aimed at children); actualization of visual mode as a leading conceptualization mode; the leading role of the mental space MAN.

Keywords: indirect names in text, relations of reference, conceptualization techniques, perception modes, mental spaces
