Abstract: The article carries the findings of a study into the phenomenon of linguistic creativity, namely, the hybridization of linguacreative items in current English- and Russian-language press articles (over the years 2000–2020), looking at issues in Russian politics that have global significance. Thus, proceeding from the study of 500 press articles, three important components of modern media discourse have been identified and analysed: ideological (the study of current events in Russian politics), linguistic (linguacreative form of presenting material on the chosen topic) and pragmatic (the respective attitude of the author). It is hence concluded that hybridization of linguacreative items in media discourse can be same-level (i.e. actualized at the same language layer), cross-level (i.e. based on interaction of linguacreative items at different language levels), and cross-semiotic (i.e. employed in different semiotic systems, e.g. textual and graphic). It is noted that hybrid interaction of linguacreative items, along with other language means identified in the same writing, forms the author's metadiscourse. It is concluded that, from the point of view of pragmatics, hybridization of linguacreative items makes media articles eye-catchy and attracts the reader’s attention, simultaneously expressing authorial evaluation, which also testifies to its significant manipulative potential.

Keywords: linguistic creativity, linguacreative item, metadiscourse, media discourse
